Skribentens beskrivelse af The stolen generationUddrag: Who are the stolen generation of aborigines? The 'Stolen Generations' are the generations of Aboriginal children taken away from their families by governments. When the first English settlers arrived in 1788, to establish the first colonial settlement, they discovered that Australia was not empty. There were living people already. The English called these people the Aborigines. The name aborigine means from the beginning. The Aborigines lived in Australia for perhaps 60.000 years. They had almost no contact with the outside world. They weren’t interested in any of the things they brought with them. But most of them died out after the white people arrived. English people fought with the Aborigines, killed them, forced them to work as slaves, and took their tribal lands, and often their women, too. But also many of them died, because of the disease they brought. |
