„Live your life fully. Because we all are going to die, there is just no one who knows when.“ Sarah R. Hansen

For or against?

Lately, I have heard many discussions about active euthanasia, a wide subject that become important to me after I met Leif. I was in practice in a nursing center. This experience was one of those that helps one to think deeper about the meaning of life.

I have read in the newspapers that there are many Danish people, who would like that the euthanasia become legal in Denmark. But the majority of the politicians and the church are saying no, until now.

Euthanasia can be done by a passive or active way.

Active euthanasia means that a patient dies with the help of a doctor. He receives some medicine or an injection to die, if the patient cannot be cured of his disease. There are some countries where euthanasia it is legal, like in Netherlands or Belgium. But in Denmark it is still illegal.

We can also talk about passive euthanasia if a patient, that has a chronical disease, refuses the treatment. For example, the patience that are suffering from cancer can decide that they will not continue with chemo. Accordingly with their refuse of treatment, they will die faster. Under the same law, the patient can receive pain killers. If a person is mentally ill, his family is the one that has to take a decision together with their family doctor, but they have to take into consideration what the patient wanted before becoming ill. In Denmark, it is a big discussion if the passive euthanasia should be legal. At this moment is still considered illegal.
