Since 2006, “torrent sharing” has been the primary source for downloading and trading with software, music, movies, and digital books online for users. A Torrent-file is an online, illegally downloaded file that can be downloaded on the Internet without any expenses for the user.

"Torrent" means "river", "power" or "an abundance of something."

Torrents are very unpopular with the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and other copyright authorities, but are much beloved by millions of young people around the planet. The MPAA is a company that own, among others, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Disney, 20th century fox, Universal and Sony Pictures. Therefore, they own the rights to almost all movies.

Torrents (also known as "bit torrents") work by downloading small bits of files from many different web sources at the same time.

Torrent downloading is extremely easy to use and this is one of the main reasons that so many people get tempted to download files illegally.

Torrent networking debuted in 2001. A programmer called Bram Cohen, created the technology with the intent to share it with everyone.

The torrent community has now grown to millions of users worldwide, and torrent networking is the most popular activity on the Internet today.
