“Did you hear that the government are going to legalise cannabis?“ my dad asked us at the dinner table. Of course I had heard about his completely foolish decision made by thick-headed, ignorant people. Our teachers had told us at school that from the year 2015, cannabis would be available at various shops right here in the city that is Luxembourg. The only law concerning this was that you had to be at least 16 to buy it. Had they gone mad? All the potheads at school had of course been more than thrilled due to this “spectacular” news. What a joke. Did the government not care at all about what this drug could, and probably would do to the youth of Luxembourg?

My sister, the idiotic excuse of an educated human being, of course agreed with all the stoners at school. “I think this will be great”, she naively said, “Humour me. What could possibly be good about having an entire population walking around high as kites?” I asked her, “Well for starters a regulated, legal market in cannabis would reduce its sales and use among teenagers, as well as reduce their exposure to other drugs in the illegal market. Plus Cannabis is not a lethal drug, it’s safer than alcohol”. “So what you’re suggesting is that instead of going out and getting drunk on a Friday night, we should all just kick up our feet and smoke a fatty? You must be joking! That’s just ridiculous” She had without a doubt lost all common sense, I thought to myself. “That is not what she said sweetheart, stop putting words in your sister’s mouth” my mother asked of me, “Well it’s what she implied. She obviously hasn’t read into all the bad things about smoking weed, otherwise she wouldn’t be so gullible. Only scrolled through stoner websites about legalizing the “magic drug”. I don’t think she for an example knows that teenagers that smoke weed every day is 60% less likely to finish school. 60% mum! That’s crazy! And also, before going all hippie on me, did she consider the fact that daily users are also 7 times more likely to commit suicide? Does she know that abusing it leads to depression, use of other illicit drugs, not being able to obtain a university degree and many other unnecessary and widely unknown side effects from a simple high? Obviously not, because if she did there is no way she would even think of still being pro-legalization”.
