1. How can language be an instrument of power in civic affairs?

As democracy began and citizens got the opportunity to have a say in civic affairs, the interest in language as an instrument of power soon spread. The language can bee used to fight with and win peoples trust if the person that speak is using the art og speaking well.

2. Why were the sophists unpopular?

The sophists (rhetoric teachers) didn´t have a good reputation, because some people thought that speaking well was a false art, and because people thought the only reason the sophists was speaking beautifully, and persuasively was because they didn´t want to speak the truth.

3. What does it mean that rhetoric is ethical?

Rhetoricians believe you have to play by certain rules, which is: you have to be honest, you can´t manipulate information to support your case, and you can´t ignore good arguments against your case. You also have to know when to speak, and when to hold your tongue. And if you want to change something in this world, you have to choose the proper moment to talk about this. All in all you have to have perfect timing.
