Abstract
This study explores the social and cultural norms that dominated the Victorian age and examines how women’s role in society is reflected through Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre. To examine this, there will be given an analysis of the novel that focuses on the subject of women’s role. Women’s social status is criticized and related to Jane’s situation. Parallels are drawn from Brontë to Jane, and it is demonstrated that there are striking similarities between the dilemmas faced by the writer and the novels main character. Furthermore, the paper discusses the novels current relevance in the 21st century and it is explained how the debate about equality of the sexes seems to not yet have come to an end. Finally, the paper concludes that the Victorian age was influenced by a strict sense of moral and strictly based on social classes, which it criticized through Jane Eyre. It is also concluded, that the gender equality debate is still an ongoing topic.
