R. Cobb’s represents the modern civilization in a negative aspect. Looking at the image below, we can see an insight on how R. Cobb’s visualize the future, including his opinion on it. The picture explores issues, such as consumerism, mass media, urbanization and how the modern world has ruined the natural beauty to the earth. The picture is shown from a bird-eye view, which indicates that Cobb wants us to see the full “story” and, not only a part of it. The road itself is a huge component in the picture which tells me, that my attention should be drawn on it, and the smoke in the background. We can see the black heavy smoke following the cars, but the smoke can also be seen on the left side, coming from the tall buildings. The smoke is extending throughout the whole atmosphere, and is an indication to the increased use of power lines which also can be seen on the picture. The power lines symbolize the increased need for power and technology, in the modern and urbanized world. The rubbish that are scattered all over the picture, are also a clarification of our analyzation of the modern population, not taking care of the earth. Instead of caring more about the environment which can get us all killed if mistreated, the modern world care more about the technology. Irony can also be sensed when we look at the sign “scenic drive” which leads our attention to the huge billboards, displaying what is supposed to be “scenic”. It’s sad to see that everything that used to be natural and beautiful, can now only be seen through a screen, because we have ruined most of our environment.
