She opens her commencement speech by thanking the school for inviting her, and by applauding the graduates. She then goes on to talk about her first experiences with gender inequality by telling a personal story. She explains that when she was younger, she was put down by a man who did not believe in her opinions because she was a woman. Adichie then mentions how privileged men are, and how it often blinds people of the inequalities that surround them.
