Racism has always been part of United States history. Whites have suppressed and discriminated African Americans. African Americans have been treated unfairly, and that is one of the reasons for the big difference between blacks and whites in the United States. That’s the topic author Eula Biss writes about, along with the story of the Telephone Poles in her article.
The text “Time and Distance Overcome” is an essay from 2008, written by the author Eula Biss, which is a white American woman. At the beginning of the text we here about the invention of the telephone. It was described as “something that could see us all connected through one branching cable”. It’s was an amazing invention, that benefited the modern world. But in this story, the good intentions and possibilities are exploited into bad things. For a lot of African Americans, it was a nightmare. Many of them got executed during the period of the breakthrough of the telephone. the telephone met big opposition from the white Americans who did not like the new invention. They think they were ugly and disturbed their private lives.
“Wherever telephone companies were erecting poles, homeowners and business owners were sawing them down, or defending their sidewalks with rifles.” (ll. 27-29)
