Big Mouth and Ugly Girl is a great book. It’s written in flowing language, the story is very original, and the characters are very well described. When you’re reading the book, you almost get the feeling of knowing them. Matt Donaghy, the main character, is one of the popular guys at Rocky River High. He is both smart and funny, but he does have a big mouth. One day, when he’s sitting in the cafeteria with some friends, he jokes about blowing up the school. Even though it was only a childish joke, Matt gets himself into serious trouble. Suspicious detectives show up at the school to charge him, and he gets suspended for 3 days. None of his friends want to help him, because they’re afraid of getting involved in what could easily become a nasty affair.

The only one who decides to help him is the captain of the school’s basketball team, Ursula Riggs, also known as ‘Ugly Girl’. She knows what kind of a person Matt is, and she would never believe that he could do such a thing as blowing up the school. Even though her mother tells her not to get involved, she goes to the Principal and tells him that Matt is innocent and would never commit such a crime. The Principal believes her, and Matt is no longer in trouble.
