http://towardfreedom.com/home/content/view/1567/1/ - what is causing piracy?
I’ve chosen to discuss the recent issues with the piracy in Somalia. The Piracy issue in Somalia has increased since the second phase of the Somali Civil war in the early 21st century. Because of the increased amounts of hijackings the costs of shipping goods has increased, and some shipping companies have even decided to take the route around Africa, to avoid hijackings. The westerns worlds answer to the piracy in Somalia, is mainly to bring war ships to the area, to patrol, give a sense of security to the shipping companies and of course to capture the pirates. This subject is interesting because, the root of the piracy issues isn’t found at offshore but onshore. So the question is, what is/are the root(s) of the piracy in Somalia?
The pollution and the nuclear waste being dumped in Somalia’s sea, is killing all marine life, destroying thousands of fishermen’s income. In the 90’s Somalia were using nuclear to provide the country with power, but they didn’t know how to get rid of the nuclear waste, so they hired companies, which were run by pirates, to get rid of it. The Somalia At the beginning of the “piracy industry” the piracy was a response to the illegal fishing. And without any real law enforcement, illegal fishing was a very profitable business, so the legit fishermen started to arm themselves and demanding the illegal fishing boats to pay a tax. But the fishermen soon realized that demanding the taxes was far more profitable, than fishing, and that’s how piracy started.
