”The Landlady” is a short story, where we meet the young and briskly Billy Weaver. Billy is 17 years old and comes from London. He has been travelling with the afternoon train to Bath for a business trip. When he arrives to Bath it is early in the evening and you can slowly begin to see the moon and the stars in the sky. Billy has no place to stay for the night, because the company he works for told him that he should find something by himself. Billy decides to ask the porter at the train station if he knew a good and cheap place to stay for the night. Billy gets recommended the “bell and dragon” which is a kind of tavern. While Billy is going to the bell and dragon he sees an old house, with a sign that says “bed and breakfast”. Billy decides to ring the doorbell, to see the place and hear about the price before he moves on. A middle-aged landlady answers the door immediately as if she had been expecting him. The landlady offers Billy a fee of five and six pence a night, which is much cheaper than “the bell and dragon” he thinks. The landlady shows Billy his room, which was on the second floor. Billy also gets offered dinner, which he refuses. The landlady tells Billy that he must go down and sign the guest book, because it’s the law of the land. When Billy is about to sign the guestbook he sees that there’s only two other names in it. He’s studying the names for a while, and finds them kind of familiar. But he can’t remember where he has seen them before. The landlady drops a comment about one of the persons which seems to Billy, that have they left not long time ago. Later the landlady says that both of the guests are still residing at the inn. Billy sees that the two pets the lady has is just stuffed pets. The landlady tells Billy that she stuffs all of her pets. The story ends with Billy asking if there have been any other guests or visitors in the past few years, to which the landlady replies, "No my dear, only you."
