The swimmer is a short story about an unknown woman sitting at her desk looking out on a beautiful river, dreaming of its cold water. Many times has she tried to get near it and go into the water, but every time she’s been overpowered by fear. Then one day she finally stops thinking and just floats with the current. The text begins with the main characters view from the office window where a detailed description is given. The description of the river and its surroundings quickly brings the reader to a calm relaxed state of mind, almost like he or she is sitting next to the main character and enjoying the view. The text shows us right from the start that the language is full of emotions, adjectives and senses and is very descriptive. It’s almost like the narrator has complete control over the mind of the reader, because the language is so descriptive that it makes the reader relate. For instance when the main character entered the water. “ Gasping, her hot skin shocked cold river, but exhilarated and woken from the sweltering daze that had takenher over, she takesstock” By a detailed describing, the reader almost feel like as if they were in the storyline. The Narrator in this text is an all-knowing third person narrator who looks at a woman describing her every move and thought. There is only one person in the text, a woman whoms name we never find out. By the way, the language is described makes the reader relates to her. The story begins with in an office where the main character dreams of swimming in the river. Although she has already tried to get in the water, because she takes her costume and towel and walks down to the river, but changes her mind. “She came here once before, with her costume and towel. She observed the water, watched it flow and her fears completely overcame her”. This tells us that she is afraid of jumping.
