The death penalty, also known as capital punishment is when a government or state executes someone, usually but not always because they have committed a serious crime. The most common crimes that were punishable by the death penalty are; torture before murder, murder of children and murder of police officers. There are different types of executions, it depends on where you are from in the world. Countries like Saudi-Arabia are renowned for beheadings by sabre for crimes we would see as petty in the West. Earlier in history, the French put to purpose the guillotine, as a punishment for those who were treasonous. Despite civil advancement and liberal social reforms in the US, certain US state governments still have the ability to deprive a citizen of their life.
On the third July 1976 did the supreme court decide that death penalty was not a cruel thing and should be legal.
Executions took peculiar forms. The most used and memorable form of execution in California was that of the gas chamber which was modified in San Quentin State Prison, altering the gas chamber to enable the properties of the lethal injection. The lethal injection is seen as the most humane and sanitary way of execution in the US, as it neglects pain and suffering. The Lethal injection is relatively recent, as it was only introduced in 1993. However, in the US, people are given the choice to choose how they wish to die, lethal gas and lethal injection are the most common. The other two methods of execution were hanging and shooting, before California was a part of the Union, shooting was the most prominent form of execution, and once admitted into the Union, they adopted hanging.
