Today I have interviewed Joel Davis who won the ''Young person of the year'' price in 2014. Joel told me that he lives in Islington in London. His mother had been a drug addict all her life and he didn’t know his father. ''I had a very difficult childhood. I was surrounded by people who had both parents, which made me feel different.'' he says. His family was poor and he struggled in school and was always bullied because he couldn’t read, the teachers ignored the bullying and didn’t help him at all, he was very sad. When he wasn't at school he was working to provide his family.
Joel told me, that when he turned 18 his mother got better, and because of that he got more strength. He started searching for some reading classes. He found many classes, but unfortunatly they were too expensive. Therefore, he began reading by himself. He read for about 45 mins daily. As time went by he could read faster and faster. He decided to start his own tutoring service with Homework help in his mothers basement, where he would put a couple of chairs and tables.
There were about 3 to 5 kids a week. He didn't care how many kids there were, he was just happy to help. The few children who came, were so happy. The kids got better grades than ever before and the kids told their parents and all their friends about this fantastic place. Then it started growing. More and more people were offering rooms and help. Since then Joel have gotten more than 170 children in his classes. “It was amazing how generous and nice people could be.” Joel said.
