Abstract

This paper examines the ideologies presented in Jóanes Nielsens novel Glansbilledsamlerne. Mainly through Foucauldian discourse analysis it uncovers the social structures, and discursive formations of the Faroese society as it is portrayed in the novel, and additionally illuminates how the individual characters become objects to the hegemonic discourse, which is that of a strongly restrictive and judgmental religion. It will also delve into a poem by Jóanes Nielsen, and it will be auditing the authors presence in his literature through a portrait film about him. By placing the data in a juxtaposition, it reveals that the author is mirrored in his literature to such a degree, that the novel Glansbilledsamlerne could classify as A borderline performative autobiography. Through binary oppositions the data is deconstructed to reveal that Jóanes Nielsen unintentionally defines a new restricting discourse; the existence of ‘a proper faroese’, and therefor also ‘an improper faroese’.
