The island of Dr Moreau - summary It all started when Prendick, who is the protagonist and the storyteller, barely survived the sinking of the ship, The Lady Vain. He survived by escaping on a dinghy with two other men. The two men, he escaped with, started to fight over a little thing, which resulted in, both of them, falling over the sides of the dinghy. Prendick got more and more weak, and was almost dead, since he got nothing to eat or drink. Fortunately, a man called Montgomery, found him, and he nursed Pendrick back to health. Montgomery was a mysterious man. He brought animals to the unknown pacific island he lived on. Everyday Pendrick could hear painful sounds of animals crying. One day Pendrick was out exploring the island. Nearby a stream, he saw something strange. First, he thought it was an animal, which drank thirstily with its head down at the water. However, when he got closer he could see that the animal was a man. The man was using his hands and feet, and he drank like a cat. His legs were much shorter than his body, and he was covered in hair from head to toe. Pendrick felt uncomfortable, so he ran home again. He told Montgomery about the weird man, hoping to get an explanation about all those strange and weird things on the island. Montgomery tried to evade the issue and Pendrick never got an explanation.Pendrick saw more and more of these strange men, and now Pendrick was firmly resolved to get an explanation. Dr. Moreau, the owner of the island, revealed his experiments to Prendick. He explained that he was altering animals to think and behave like humans. He has not only changed their bodies but also made a law by which the new creatures were living after. They memorised the law in and out. The purpose of the law was to prevent animal behaviours such as predatory instincts and walking on all fours. Breakers of the Law were sent to Dr. Moreau’s house of pain.
