Abstract

This document is a study project for the SRP (field of study project) of 2018 which goes into detail about the shell chair and contains an in-depth analysis which looks at the design of a shell chair and also looks at the shell chair from a technological standpoint. The design analysis goes into detail about the form, function and construction of the chair, but also utilizes inner, outer and context from a design analysis model. Alongside the technology analysis which looks at technique, knowledge and organization the document also contains an LCA, a life cycle assessment which goes through the shell chairs lifecycle – from the acquisition of the materials to the lacquering of the shells themselves, to the end of life of the product. The shell chair made things move in the design culture, made the culture accept different kind of things such as organic forms, form follows fun instead of function. In this report the design and technological analyses analyze the work of Arne Jacobsen as designer and Fritz Hansen as the manufacturer. The report also looks at the production and what happens in the production itself, the individual steps – these steps get looked at in the LCA analysis. The report also contains a discussion which looks at the influence of the shell chair, which elements that have influence in the diffusion and quality of the shell chair. The discussion goes further and looks at future development of the shell chair, with this also technology and the market in the future.
