[NAVN A], a Puerto Rican teenager at the age of sixteen. He was raised in an upper-middleclass home and went to a private school. They once had a representative of an American High School visit their school as it had an outstanding reputation of being one of the best schools in the country. He introduced them to a program where foreign students could go and study in the United States for a specific period of time as a part of a study that was meant to provide insight for the Puerto Rican government on how to improve the public education system.
Gabriel did not think much of it, as he did not speak English and did not want to leave his family. His family thought otherwise though. They saw it as a great opportunity for their son to learn English and maybe have a better idea of what getting an education would be like, as the majority of his family were uneducated and were restaurant owners.
The parents applied to the program and they agreed to take him. Gabriel left a few weeks later with his friends, who also were in a similar situation as him. Once they arrived, they found out that they were not all going to the same school. This made Gabriel nervous as he would not have anybody to communicate with. Those assigned to the program reassured him by telling him there would be other Latino students at his school.
