Bob was our personal guide for the day, we explained to him that we’d landed yesterday here in Phnom Phen - Cambodia and we were ready to experience new things and make memories. Bob explained that we would be starting at a local market near our hotel. We hooked a ride in a Tuk-Tuk which is a sort of scooter taxi and a few minutes later we stood in a busy marketplace with everything from fresh fruit and fish to local flutes and gadgets. Bob insisted that we were to taste an Asian fruit called lychee. It looks a bit like a chestnut with that green and spiky shell on, just with a purple and pink colouration. When opened, it´s like a soft, juicy, transparent ball which tastes perfumed and has the texture of a soft wine gum.
Next up Bob had planned for us to visit a school just out of town, and so we hooked us another ride and with spirits high, we entered a schoolyard full of kids who, as soon as they saw us, rushed over and greeted us, many in their native language and a few who greeted us with simple sentences in English. Bob knew the principal who decided to show us around the place. The classes were jam-packed with kids who, as the principal said, “Worked hard and dedicated for getting an education”. All the kids shared a bathroom with each other, which was a simple hole in the ground, with a seat to stand on. Bob explained that they simply don’t use our sorts of toilets and only hotels and restaurants have them for tourists.
