Prepping, meaningful or a cultist dream of a self-fulfilling prophecy?

Prepping in the US, what is it and why are some folks so obsessed with the ideology of being self-sufficient? According to the dictionary “Oxford Languages” prepping is “the action or process of preparing something, or preparing for something”; which I think can be interpreted in many ways, however is this context I am talking about “SHTF” scenarios as Kiki Bandilla mentions in the video produced by Natasha Hussain via, TRT world’s YouTube channel. In this specific case of prepping a group of people are preparing for the society to end as we know it, they are stocking up on weapons and canned food, they even have an underground bunker available. In the video we are visiting a place called “Fortitude Ranch” located at an undisclosed location in Colorado This is a so called survival ranch, where they as mentioned before stock up on essential items to prepare for the end of society. “Fortitude ranch” would like to cater towards the mainstream American, meaning that as a member you can stay for up to ten days a year, using the place as a kind of survival resort for the holidays.
