Christian 4 is the King who has left the most traces in history, as many of his castles and buildings are still here. In his 60 years on the throne, he rules a kingdom that has not been bigger before or since. The map of Denmark extends throughout Norway, Denmark, Schleswig-Holstein, Skåne, Halland and Blekinge. And further on to the distant colonies of Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Tranquebar.

At 19 years old, Christian IV gets the crown on his head. The first years on the throne, the king travels around the world by sea, and he is inspired by the magnificent castles of England and Italy. Returning home, he immediately sets about erecting magnificent buildings. Everywhere, the number 4 is popping up. Børsen, Rundetårn, Trinitatis Church and Rosenborg Castle bear the king's monogram. He also adds an extra spire to Copenhagen Castle's main tower, the Blue Tower. What he doesn't know is that his own daughter Leonora Christina becomes a prisoner in the same tower after his death. He builds a brand new Frederiksborg Castle, where he quite exorbitantly compares himself to the heroes of antiquity. He adorns his castle with Caesar, Alexander the Great, columns and triumphal arches. In the palace square, Neptune stands the ruler of the Sound. The people have great thoughts about their king, and so does he himself.
