Swift tries to engage with the audience several times throughout the text, it especially becomes clear when she uses modes of persuasion such as pathos. Her way of using pathos is depicted in the references she gives from her own life experiences “The first of which is…life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once.” (l. 62) Here she uses pathos as she connects the words life and heavy, her goal is for us to feel compassion with her because she makes it known that her life has not been easy. Furthermore, it boosts her ethos because it is simply more appealing to seize advice from someone who has a lot of knowledge, due to the things they have experienced, even if it not pleasant experiences. Opposite to someone who has not gained sufficient knowledge through their maturity. She makes it known that it has been a difficult passage from where she stands now, giving advice to other young people on how to handle life while being young met with a lot of expectations. Therefore, she sets herself in the shoes of her audience and making herself credible on the topic.
