Everybody should be familiar with Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948). He was an Indian man who spent most of his life fighting for India’s independence from the British colonial power. He became famous for his nonviolent opposition, political hunger strikes and belief that politics should not be based on religion. He was imprisoned several times for his rebellions. He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, who believed that Gandhi was too sympathetic to the Muslims in India.
Mother Theresa
Many consider Blessed Theresa of Calcutta, or Mother Theresa, a hero due to her many years of helping the poor. She was born in Albania in 1910, and from a very early age, she was determined to commit herself to a religious life and help the poorest people in the world. She founded the order Missionaries of Charity, an organisation that runs orphanages, schools, soup kitchens, and homes for people with HIV or tuberculosis, among other things.
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was a South African revolutionary who was most famous for his opposition against apartheid. Mandela was arrested several times for rebellious activities and imprisoned for 27 years. He was elected president in 1994, after which he introduced a new constitution, tried to fight poverty and focused a lot on charity work. In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.
