There are many ways to react to certain situations when you are traumatized. From person to person, everyone has their own individual reaction to difficult situations they’ve experienced throughout their life. Trauma can be the cause behind many brutal actions is showcased in the short novelle named: Hostage written by Andrew Vachss in the year 1989. In the beginning, we get introduced to Walker the protagonist of the novel. He experienced a lot of inhumane incidents and is now working as a hostage negotiator. He is willing to help a scared and furious young man named Mark who is keeping his mother hostage, but the story ends with an unexpected turn. Walker is a cold psychopath who isn’t scared to manipulate and hurt other individuals in the short novel.
Walker the protagonist is two faced character. Who manipulates people for his own benefit. “She’s gone” His smile was tentative, but he produced a pack, handed it to me. We lit up, smoked in silence. Then he told me his story.” (p. 162, ll. 10-14). Walker is trying to seem trustworthy in Mark´s eyes, by being submissive and sincere trying to calm him down and talk to Mark for good. However, he switches quickly and makes a brutal decision that changes the story ruthlessly. “I stepped away from him. Turned and brought up the pistol. His face froze. I put two rounds into his chest. Footsteps pounded on the stairs. Self-defense. Maybe now they’ll give me my gun back” (p. 162, ll. 26-30). His actions show the unreliable part of his personality. He switched from a caring and genuine to a cruel psychopath who kills without a second thought. After he shoots the innocent boy, Mark, the sentences become shorter and more intense. The two last sentences can resemble the two loud gunshots of the bullets hitting Mark´s chest.
