The new technology and social networking are some very discussed subjects. Nowadays the debate of the problems and the advantages about it is often discussed. In this assignment I will give an outline of information and communication technology, following by an analysis of Stuart Jeffries text. Furthermore I will discuss some appropriate ways of using the Internet.
The first text, called “Don’t Want to Talk About It? Order a Missed Call” written by Matt Richtel, who is an American writer and journalist, is about the problem of the new technology and its consequences. Richtel mentions a woman called Alexis Gorman who is an active user of the new technology. She didn’t want to face an awkward confrontation if she called him, so she used a new service named “Slydial” which enabled that she could call him without talking directly to him. Gorman was one of the first persons that have used the test-version of the service, but when it got released in public more that 200,000 people are using it, for example because of support from McDonald’s.
The new technology has given us a lot more power to determine when we want some and how our manner of expression should be. Several experts have therefore implied that it may turn people into a ‘digital-era solipsists’, who are more interested in surfing and chatting on the internet than talking with real-life persons and be social. But Gorman states it positively; “If it’s some jerk I went out on a couple of dates with, I can do without that drama,” she says.
