EAST IS EAST

About the film: "East is east" is written by Ayub Khan-Din, who actually wrote the text as a play. The play got that big success in London, that Damien O'Donnell decided to make a movie of the manuscript, but he changed it a little bit, specially the main character, George, because he was too harsh and brutal. The film: We are in the small North-English suberb, Salford, next to Manchester. The year is 1971. In Salford do we meet the family Khan. It consists of the head of the family, Zaheed, but people only call him George. He came to England in 1937 and married his wife, Ella a kind, English woman. Together they have 6 boys and 1 girl: Azir, Maneer (called Gandhi, because he is so religious), Abdul, Tarig, Saleem, and the youngest member of the family, Saleem he always wear a green Parka Coat. Their daughters name is Maheed. Ella and George has the fish'n'chips-shop "English Chippy", where Ella works hard every day. Nazir is George and Ella's oldest son, and George has decided, that he is going to get married under compulsion. All the preparations is finally finished, and the 5 other children wears reluctant the Pakistanis clothes. George tells Nazir all the time, how happy he feels about it, and how proud he is of him because that's George's dream, but not Nazir's. In the room full of atmosphere waits all the anxious guests. The bridal couple is decorated with beautiful, colored costumes and lots of trimming. When their kind of clergyman is going to marry them, exclaims Nazir "I can't do this, daddy!", and then he run away. Everybody get amazed, and nobody understand, what's going on. When they come home, George removes the picture of Nazir and declares him death. He had brought his family in shame. 6 months later: Tariq is a "player"; so much the better, and he has a girlfriend, named Stella. They spend time with each other in secretly, cause otherwise George gets very mad he only tolerates girls from Pakistan with same culture as them. The mosque-bus comes, and George forces his children to get in the bus. In the school of Koran, Sajid has to pee. Some of the other guys spot, that he isn't circumcised. Again George fells, that one of his sons is bringing him and his family shame. Sajid tries to hide from his father, but George is stronger and more powerful than him. George, who always determines it all, tries to persuade Sajid with presents and expensive things, but Sajid doesn't wants to follow him to the hospital no matter what. At last did George lose his patience, and he hauls Sajid to the operating theatre. George got very angry, when he discovers, that the doctor is Indian. Maneer is the only one, who really is very religious at home and of course George. The other children do things like normal English people; eat bacon and swine every time for example, when George isn't home. They all of sudden had the time to get the smell of bacon away, before the parents and Sajid came home, but it was on a close shave. The operation did hurt Sajid, and Ella had a guilty conscience. A man from the mosque advice George to marry his to oldest sons, Tariq and Abdul under compulsion, and George thinks, it sounds like a good idea. Without informing Ella or the rest of the family about why, decides George, that they are going to visit some of their "friends" in Bradford. George would love to move to this place, because it's almost only Pakistanis people, who live there. They are going to meet Mr Shah (the father of the two girls, who's going to marry Tariq and Abdul), and his wife, Mrs Shah. Ella, Menaah and Mrs Shah are sitting in an other room next to the men's. Suddenly Mrs Shah starts crying, because her "babies" has grown up that fast, and in no time, they all sitting and cry for a long time. Afterwards went the family Khah to the cinema and saw a Pakistanis film. First when they come home, George tells Ella about the wedding-plans. Ella gets
