Abstract:

This paper tried to give a deeper understanding of Iran’s possibilities of producing nuclear weapons by using the country’s civil nuclear program. Furthermore it investigated which factors that have caused this issue to be discussed so widely on an international scale. This question was enlightened through a review of the Iranian nuclear-program followed up by an analysis of the scientific background of producing nuclear weapons, throughout a civil nuclear program. At last the international focus was investigated through the news media with special reference to the international organizations and states, which played an important role in the case. The main point in the review was that Iran has been using nuclear power since the 70’ies and is capable of enriching uranium today. The scientific investigation gave the impression that, using a nuclear program in the making of nuclear weapons, is most a question of choice. The international focus on the Iranian nuclear program is fed by the fact that the power balance in the international society is moving. The conclusion to the total investigation of the Iranian nuclear program was that Iran has or soon will have the facilities needed to produce nuclear weapons. This is an important issue to the central states in the international society. The central questions to be discussed are if the western superpowers are able to work together in the prevention of Iran as a nuclear power and if it is the intensions of the Iranian government? Only the future is able to give the correct answer to these questions.
