Abstract
The subject of this paper is the Chinese economy and the Chinese political system.
The first part deals with the historical situation from 1949, when Mao and the KKP took power. When Mao died in 1976 and Deng Xiaoping eventually took over, reforms started. Deng Xiaopings plan was to reform the Chinese economy - but not the political system - by introducing the free market and opening the huge country to foreign investments and entrepreneurship.
The reforms have succeeded in so far as China is today the biggest exporter, and has sustained an incredible growth of 10 % + over a long period - which has although recently slowed down. Chinas economy is today the second biggest only surpassed by the USA’s, an economy which they are expected to overtake within a very foreseeable future.
The KKP has privatized large sections of the industry and trade, but still holds control of key sections such as the banking sector. China has been challenged by demonstrations and protests from the population demanding more freedom and democracy but has so far succeeded in maintaining a semi-capitalist way of arranging the economy with a totalitarian government strategy.
