John F. Kennedy was elected 35th President of the United States in 1960. He had simultaneously become the first Irish Catholic American and youngest man in U.S. history to be elected President. John Kennedy was married with Jacqueline Bouvier. Behind the glamorous facade, the Kennedys also experienced many personal tragedies. Jacqueline had a miscarriage in 1955 and a stillbirth in 1956. Their newborn son, Patrick Bouvier Kennedy, died in August 1963. Kennedy had two children who survived infancy. President Kennedy had an affair with Marilyn Monroe. On 22 November 1963 was President John F. Kennedy killed by an assassination in Dallas, Texas. The presumed assassin, Lee Harvey Osvald was even shot a few days later by Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner. Martin Luther King is a man that is remembered and respected throughout the world, and he will never be forgotten. King´s efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his very famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Part of the speech was "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Martin Luther King was assassinated on 4 April 1968 on a hotel balcony by James Earl Ray, who received a sentence of 99 years. A Russian astronaut with name Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space in 1961. Nelson Mandela, the black South African leader, was imprisoned in 1962. The South African courts convicted him on charges of sabotage, as well as other crimes committed while he led the movement against apartheid. In accordance with his conviction, Mandela served 27 years in prison. The first woman in the space was valentine Tereshkova in 1963.
