THE SIXTIES The events and peoples John F. Kennedy was elected 35th President of the United States in 1960. He had simultaneously become the first Irish Catholic American and youngest man in U.S. history to be elected President. John Kennedy was married with Jacqueline Bouvier. Behind the glamorous facade, the Kennedys also experienced many personal tragedies. Jacqueline had a miscarriage in 1955 and a stillbirth in 1956.
