‘’Two Kinds’’ is a short story about a Chines girl. The girl’s mother believed you could be anything you wanted in America.
The mother had come to America in 1949 after losing everything in China: her mother, father, her family home, her first husband and two daughters.
The mother wanted her daughter to become a infant prodigy (wonder child), a Chinese Shirley Temple, so the mother took her to a beauty training school – were her hair were cut short. The daughter didn’t wanted what her mother wanted for her, so she decided she wouldn’t let her mother change her. Her mother then made a deal with Mr. Chong on the first floor, so she could lean to play the piano, which the girl also didn’t want to.
So one day the mother and the daughter get in a fight where the mother subsequent stops her plan about making her daughter into an infant prodigy.
Analysis
The narrator in ‘‘Two Kinds’’ ‘’is an unreliable first person narrator. This doesn't necessarily mean the narrator don't show up when they say they will, but rather those they either can't or won't tell us what really happened. We hear about the narrator’s thoughts, and her feelings’’ about becoming an infant prodigy.
