This study examines the actual causes of the American Civil War and its consequences for the former slaves. The American civil war was one of the bloodiest in American history which also changed the way of life and the social structure of the nation. By looking at the speeches from the time leading up to the war and the actual facts and knowledge from there, I examined the possible causes of why the war broke out. In addition, I looked at a speech from 1963 by President Kennedy that would clarify the situation for the Negro after the war and the consequences. I found out that it was major differences between North and South that caused the war. They were too different politically, socially and economically to gather under one "roof". Negroes have experienced severe discrimination and racism for many years ahead and partly still do, while the fight continues for equality regardless of colour, culture or religion.
