Aborigines in Australia Aborigines, dreamtime & the lost generation The word “aboriginal” means “the first” or “earliest known”. The Aborigines, represent 2% of the Australian population, 400,000 people. Before the Europeans came to Australia, there were about 2 million Aborigines. They lived in balance with the nature, with freedom and friendship between the tribes. As many years went by, more and more Europeans came to Australia. The Europeans persecuted the Aborigines hard and in 1920 the number had fallen to 60,000. It ended up in many fights between Aborigines and Europeans.
