Lying is a very bad thing. Some lies more than other. Some lies for good things, some lies to cheat others. In the short story “The Traveller” we see something which relates to lying. It’s written by Ryan O’Neill, and was written in 2013. It was also selected for The Best Australian Short Stories in 2013. In this story, the main character lives by lying for his family. For the most peoples is family a very important thing in their life. There is something wrong with this main character. He lives by lying for his family that he gives donations for an African orphanage, but he just saves all the money for himself. He is very lonely and isolated in the country.
The story is told by a third-person narrator. The story takes place in a town in Australia. There is not given so much information about the setting. “An airplane flew far up in the sky, travelling away from the sun, which hadn’t appeared to change its position all day, as if it too had lost its way” (p.1 - l.3). “He turned a corner and found himself in a part of town he remembered from his childhood, massive steelworks and a railway line running behind an endless row of neglected houses” (p.1 - l.6). This shows us the fact that he is close to an airport and that it must be an industrial town. In the story, we follow what Lockhart sees, for an example that he walks around the town, and goes to the school and back to his home again. Lockhart’s family seem to come from a lower middleclass family, but we don’t get so much information’s about his family, so it’s very hard to determine.
