The story is written by Ryan Boudinot in the year 2002 and first published in Mississippi Review. This short story is about a boy who is going in the fourth-grade, his name is Davy. It is Halloween and he is going to be dressed up as Hitler. What he doesn’t know is that the most popular girl from his class is also dressed like a character from the World War II. His day at school is going to be terrible because of his costume; there will be a lot of drama. His teacher is giving him a problem by asking who Hitler is and what he did at the World War, and what he did to the character Lisette is, the popular girl. The other kids from the class are being mean to him the rest of the day. They where berating him for the death of Lisette’s character. His father is sorry and tries to make him happy, by buying a new costume for Davy. The rest of the day, they are going trick-or-treating in the richest-locking neighborhoods. What is happening to Davy in the end? Is he changing personality?
The themes of this text could be popularity/unpopular, feeling guilty or humanity. This short story could have a lot of themes and I think that these are the most specific ones. The atmosphere at the school is bad; Davy feels that the other kids are berating him for the killings, just because of his costume for Halloween. We don’t know if the problem continues after the Halloween. There is no problem at home, Davy likes his father, and the relationship between them is very good. His father is not like other parents, he is not following the rules parents should follow. He is different. He is an important character in this short story. It is “his fault” that his son is getting this awful day at school. But as a good father, he tries hardly to get his sons mood up again, by buying him a new costume and going trick-or-treating with him.
