To what extent did the differing ideologies bring about the revolution in Iran?
Introduction
Iran is a country in west Asia surrounded by 2 seas the Caspian Sea and the Arabian sea. Iran is one of the most populated countries in the Middle East. The country has some of the world's largest oil and natural gas reserves and is located north of the Persian Gulf. Until the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iran was along with Israel the main allies for The United States Of America in the Middle East. The United States of America and many other countries saw Iran as a strategic main enemy.
The revolution itself - what happened?
The reason why there was a revolution was because of Mohammad Reza Shah making a secret police and because he forced the 2 big political parties together into 1. Then came Ayatollah Khomeini and said that the Elections were rigged. He also said that if he was the leader of Iran he would give women the right to vote so most people saw him as a good man. Then a newspaper came saying that he was bribed by an oil company to say all of these words. This caused a lot of people to demonstrate and causing the police to shoot the demonstrators but creating even more demonstrators. ” Many people were killed by government forces in anti-regime protests, serving only to fuel the violence in a bad country where martyrdom played a fundamental role in religious expression."(Janet Afary) This caused the shah to leave the country, but he did not know that it was because of bad living conditions, low pay cuts and the threat of being unemployed. ”My advisers built a wall between myself and my people. I didn't realize what was happening. When I woke up, I had lost my people”(Mohammed Reza Shah) The fall of the shah meant that a new man could rise to the top and that man was Ayatollah Khomeini, he was now the new leader of Iran.
