Self-confidence is the trust or faith that you have in yourself and your abilities. Self-esteem is, therefore, the opinion you have of yourself. Self-confidence allows you to have positive yet realistic views of yourself and the situations in which you are involved. If you have self-confidence, typically you do not fear challenges, you are able to stand up for what you believe, and you have the courage to admit your limitations. However not everyone has the same level of self-confidence, and we have all had times where we felt insecure. For many people insecurities are about their appearance, whether it’s something that they can change or not. But when you lack self-confidence many everyday tasks may seem harder or almost impossible.

The short story “The Ring” by Linda Bennett is about a woman named Mirry. She’s going to be the ring bearer at a wedding for an elderly couple. At the wedding, she is standing behind the groom Gus. While they’re waiting for the bride, Gus keeps telling Mirry to sit down because her face is red as a beef, and he’s afraid she’ll faint in the middle of the ceremony, but she refuses to do so. As the bride walks down the aisle, she’s walking with her grandson. Mirry instantly notices, that he seems like the type of guy that disquiets her, and wants to hide. When the ceremony comes to the point of exchanging wedding rings she gives it to Gus. Gus, however, drops the ring and Mirry gets on the floor to look for it, which upsets her. She finds it eventually, and the ceremony goes on. After the wedding Gus apologizes for dropping the ring to Mirry. He invites Mirry to a party, and she decides to go.
