Mødet med mormoner på en rejse i USA

The young people sitting opposite me were not speaking English. I assumed they were tourists like me and asked them if they were enjoying their vacation in the US. But I was completely wrong. It turned out that they were practicing their Latin…

So, Jake and I were on our way to Wyoming from New York City. In New York we spent a lot of time experiencing all the attractions – Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, The memorial of 9/11, etc. We had so much fun! Watching New York City from the Brooklyn side at night was so amazing, and to see the memorial of World Trade Center

9/11/01 took us back to the terrible time. And now we can tick a couple more off from the bucket list. We are now in the train on our way to Wyoming – a state with lots of nature and landscape. In the subway from World Trade Center Station to Ohio we met a couple who spoke a foreign language. I was wondering why they spoke that language, and I did not really recognize it neither. It was a cool temperature in the train, but the woman was still sitting in her short dress and what looked like her husband was dressed up as well in his nice suit. They were looking together in a hard sleeve book with a cross on it. I could not stop thinking about who they were. I was too curious, so I asked them; “Are you enjoying your vacation in the US?”. They looked weird at me and said, “No. Where are you from?”, and I told them we were Danes on astray with a laughing smile. They looked at me weirder as they did before – maybe they do not know what Danish dark humour is… They were reserved in their answers but later on after they were done with looking in the bible lookalike book, they began to open up a bit. I asked them where they were going to, and they silently answered “Home…”, I was curious enough to ask them what state they were living in and why they were going by the train. The woman acted withdrawn while the man opened up and told that they had been on a church mission in New York where they had to tell about their church from back home in southwest Wyoming, and then they at the same time got to experience New York and other parts of the United States. It was a very interesting and inspiring topic to us since we did not have a huge knowledge about the churches or religions in North America. So, Jake asked him “What religion are you believing in?”, he presented himself and told us some more facts about their community “I am Mr. Barry Harrington born in Southern Idaho but moved to Wyoming after I came home from my mission as a 22-year-old. My wife and I live with our gorgeous daughter (Adlee 17), and our courteous son (Travis 15) – they both grew up in the religion as I did myself. Briefly, we are Christians”. We asked them why they were speaking a foreign language if they grew up here, and they told that they on account of the church had to learn Latin, so they have a wider knowledge and understand of the nucleus of the religion. We believe in Jesus Christ, we believe God´s teachings, we believe the life of happiness – be not afraid only believe, we believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression. Sometimes we fail but that is exactly why Jesus came. We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
