2. Where does the understanding of freedom come from, and how has it had an effect on today´s society? The understanding of freedom comes from Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the passing of the US. Constitution and its Bill of Rights some years later. The principle of freedom is meant to protect the right for people, but the ideal has not always corresponded to reality. Despite the belief in 20 freedom and equality, black slavery existed until the Civil War. And reality continues to demonstrate that some social groups and some Americans are not as free as others and do not have the same oppor25 tunities. Nevertheless, Americans are proud to point out that large numbers of people from all over the world still flock to the USA in search of a better life.
