Tupac Amaru Shakur, was an american rapper, actor and writer. He was named after Túpac Amaru II, who was an eighteenth century Peruvian revolutionary who was the leader of an indigenous retaliation against the Spanish rule in Peru. He was born in East Harlem New York on June sixteenth nineteen seventy one, just after his mother was released from prison. She was a member of the Black Panther Party and was imprisoned for her activity within the Black Panther Party. Tupac had a rough upbringing as he and his sister were moving around a lot, and staying with relatives and friends of relatives, since his mother was troubled and addicted to crack, Tupac’s childhood was filled with trouble as he was living within one of the ghettos of Baltimore and having many people in his life being members of the Black Panther Party. Then in 1988 Tupac and his family took the decision to move to Marin City California, where his coming of age started as he started taking poetry classes, where he wrote rap lyrics and poetry.
In one of his english classes he wrote a paper called “Conquering All Obstacles” in which he said “our raps, not the sorry story raps everyone is so tired of. They are about what happens in the real world. Our goal is [to] have people relate to our raps, making it easier to see what really is happening out there. Even more important, what we may do to better our world.” He wanted to educate people of all races to understand what pain the afro americans had been enduring at the time in the ghettos, the injustices and brutality of the police through conscious hip hop music.
