“A Gift for My Mother”, written by Viv McDade, is a story about a girl named Lucy, who is trying to do something nice for her mother, by picking up flowers to get her some money. Lucy knows that her mother and father doesn’t have much money.
“He took a deep breath and slapped the little brown envelope of wages down on the table. “How much is there this week?” asked my mother, and she gave a little laugh. “As much as I’ve earned, that’s how much.” “What you’ve earned isn’t enough for us to live on.” “Then die on it,” he said, walking out of the kitchen, “because it’s all there is.” - Line 29-34.
This is a quote from the text giving us the first impression of Lucy’s family being poor. A properly non-working mom who is not satisfied with the money the father earns from the garage. In the text you get this feeling about the family being different which I analyse as being black.
“I knew she was thinking about the houses on the other side of the railway line, houses with hallways and moulded skirting boards and neighbours who didn’t go down to the shops with chiffon scarves over their curlers”. - Line 9-12.
