Science-fiction can sometimes be challenging to understand and that is why I want to analyze the short-story “Super-Toys Last All Summer Long” so that the plot and message is clear for everyone.
The short-story takes place in the future as many other science-fiction stories. It is about a family who lived in an overcrowded world. David was the “child” of the family, and his parents were Monica and Henry Swinton. They lived in the ritziest city-blocks, but without any windows, because Monica wouldn’t see the overcrowded external world. Henry was the Managing Director of The Synthank, which was a company that produced artificial life.
We cannot really tell how David and Monica’s relationship is in the begging, but we get to know that David had a hard time expressing his feelings to his mom, Monica. Teddy helped David a lot with his frustrations, he was David’s secret keeper, and by the way, Teddy was a synthetic life form.
One day when Henry came home from work, Monica was exaggerated happy, not only for him coming home but because she got some amazing news. She won the parenthood lottery, which meant they could conceive a child now.
In the end of the story we find out that David is not a real person but a synthetic life form.
