The article is about how the English language is spreading all over the world, and that the EU is debating whether to recognise some more languages in for-example schools, so called minority languages.

2) What does the author advocate/argue in favour of in his article?

He thinks that English is a great way to communicate, but if you really want to understand a culture you have to talk their language. He also says that English is one of the most spoken languages in the world.

3) What arguments does he put forward to support this?

He supports that English is one of the most spoken languages by telling that according to the European Commission, some 84 percent of young people in the EU are currently learning English as a second language. No language – neither French in the Middle Ages, nor Latin before it – has ever been taught so widely in Europe.

4) According to the article what is “special” concerning the following countries: Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Britain and France? Can you think of any explanations?

Britain, Ireland and Denmark is learning English in all schools. In France 90 percent is learning it, but in Portugal only 55 percent is learning English.
