“The weekly visit” is a short story written by Emanuel Melo in 2014, which deals with the topic of Hispanic culture in which children are expected to take care of their parents when they become older and incapable of doing so themselves.
The main protagonist of the short story, Jake, helps his mother with various chores every Tuesday, and the narrative is based on one of these visits. For five years, he’s been taking the bus to his mom’s home to help her out. This is done due to the tradition of the Hispanic and various other cultures, in which the children are expected to provide for their parents when they are unable to do so. This tradition is based on the mentality that the parents have been taking care of the children ever since they were born, why it’s seen as a standard duty to do the same for the parents when the children grow up. This culture is contrasting the typical western culture in which many elderly people are stationed in a facility or institution where professionals are taking care the parents instead of the children. Such cultural tendencies can be seen in Denmark or other Scandinavian countries, for example.
