” The Weekly Visit” is a short story written by Emanuel Melo in 2014. He was working on a short story collection and he describes his attempt to “embrace equally the two languages and cultures that he uses to express his Self; at times in Portuguese, but mostly in English”

His Dual-nationality has impacted his writing style and in “The Weekly Visit” have his characters and environment often a multilingual or Portuguese twist to them. And he also mentions Canada.

The story has a third-person-narrator which is limited to Jake’s point-of-view and revolves around his thoughts. Additionally, the story follows a chronological structure throughout the story.

“The Weekly Visit” is about Jake, who had a weekly visit disabled mother, who lives alone after his husband passed away 5 years ago.

As Jake’s visits go on, he starts to feel exhausted by the idea of taking care of his mother. He begins to feel like a prisoner in his mother’s home, an example: “With the house locked up for the night, she sets the house alarm and he is her prisoner until she disarms it in the morning.” They always exchange bitter remarks that filled the atmosphere with tension - he does not even smile at her anymore and she has noticed it.
