The original inhabitants of jamaica were named arawaks and they came from south America about 2500 years ago and named island Xaymaca, which meant “land of wood and water” which I think fits very well because it is a very beautiful and vigorous landscape. Like most people would the arawaks loved the island because of its nature and that fits for them because they were peaceful people and they were living by the nature, which meant that they grew a variety vegetables and many other things. They grew cassava, sweet potatoes, maize, fruits, vegetables, cotton and tobacco, so they didn’t really have trouble surviving because of the nature until 1494. In 1494 the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus heard about the island and were told that the island had plenty of gold but he was soon to find out that there was no gold to be found. On arrival Columbus found the Arawak inhabitants and brutally attacked them with dogs and crossbow men, the arawaks tried to fight back but they had absolutely no chance of winning because of the Spaniards technical weapons. Some arawaks were killed and some were injured, but the ones who survived were violently tortured and killed.
