In the year 1841 gold was found, for the first time. It was found by a minister. But the discovery was silenced by guvenør sir George Gipps, because he was afraid that the aborigines would kill the minister and the others golddigers to get the gold.
The first discovery that was published was found 170 kilometers west of Sydney at the Macquarie river. It happened on may the fifteenth 1851. It created a lot of problems, people wandered from place to place. The employers would reward those who could find gold near one of their companies. In that way they could attract labour to their company.
Slowly the population grew, in 1860 there were over one million inhabitans.
When one worked as a golddigger one had to pay a fee to the government, but far from everyone found anything. Because of that some people began to form gangs. The most infamoous gang was the “wild colonial boys”. In 1864 they robbed a postdilligence at the sametime they held up 60 travelers. There were 3 robbers. Finally the police caught them. Some were hanged.
