For his whole life the main character, Duncan, has believed that he’s just your average straight lad. Eventually he realizes that he’s homosexual even though he has a girlfriend. Later he meets a guy [Ade] at a party that features LGBT-pride who he hooks up with and starts dating.
Now Duncan is on his way to his mother on Christmas Eve and he’s planning to tell her about his sexuality. During the dinner he tries telling her about the secret but he can’t help but hold back the words due to anxiety and not wanting to ruin their holiday. But the mother confesses that she already knows it due to the search history on her computer and she says that it’s fine with her.
Essay about ‘Homo for Christmas’
Sexuality is just one of the many identity struggles adolescence has to face in present times. The pressure from families, friends and society in general is tearing on them. Therefore, they often end up hiding their true selves as they find difficulty in revealing their true sexuality.
The source of an identity crisis is often exorbitant expectations and high morals. In the beginning of the novel, Duncan didn’t even realize that he was homosexual which becomes clear on page 2, line 2-3, ’I hadn’t joined the dots.’ It’s absolutely normal not to realize one’s true sexuality for a long time since most teens are raised to not even consider not being straight.
