The first I start thinking about when I hear ‘my body – my choice’ is discrimination and Oppression – special discrimination and Oppression of women. A word I also started thinking about then I heard it is ‘Feminists’. Women have faced discrimination throughout the millenniums, but in recent years it has become much better, but women are still facing some of the same forms of neglect. A woman should have right of self-determination over their bodies for sexual, marriage and reproductive choices as rights.
Discrimination and Oppression of Women is known worldwide - some countries more than others. A recent World Bank survey of 173 countries found that no fewer than 155 still had at least one law impeding women’s economic opportunities. Women face gender-based job restrictions in 100 countries, often confining them to low-paying activities, more often than not in the informal sector. In 18 countries the law gives husbands the right to prohibit their wives from working outside the home.
I live in Denmark. I don’t notice discrimination and Oppression of women in my daily life, as I think some other countries do. Some of the thinks that could happened in Denmark are when men commentate – in a good or bad way – women’s bodies. Also, rape is a good topic to talk about to the topic. Rape is regrettably a comparatively known thing in Denmark. The Danish Ministry of Justice estimates that around 5,100 women a year are victims of rape or attempted rape, while the University of Southern Denmark put this figure as high as 24,000 in 2017 - a high number for a country with a relatively small population (5.8 million).
